It's our goal to give newborns the best possible start by offering hearing screens, breastfeeding help, and other services before you leave the hospital.
Hepatitis B Vaccination
Shortly after birth, your baby receives the first of three Hepatitis B vaccinations to prevent a dangerous and possibly deadly disease. When you are admitted for labor and delivery, you are asked to sign a consent form and receive an information sheet. As soon as your baby is born, the vaccine is administered.
Newborn Hearing Screen
Hearing loss is the most common birth defect, occurring in three out of every 1000 babies born today. Early detection of hearing loss allows babies to receive early intervention, which can make a lifetime of difference in the development of an infant's communication and cognitive skills. Tri-City offers a free newborn hearing screen to all babies born in the hospital. Find out whether your baby's hearing is normal or whether more testing and intervention is required.
Breastfeeding Help
Before you leave the hospital you will receive a visit from one of our professional Lactation Consultants, who helps you and your baby get started with breastfeeding. We also offer regular Breastfeeding classes and support groups. We want to make sure you and your baby get all the help you need.
Growing Family Photography
Before you go home, be sure to take advantage of our on-site photography from Growing Family. Remember this once-in-a-lifetime moment with photos for the whole family, and order personalized announcements at the same time. See the current Baby Photos.
Obtaining a Birth Certificate
After your baby is born, you must apply for a Certificate of Birth. Our Medical Records Department representative will help you complete the forms, which will be submitted to the California Department of Health, Vital Statistics. In 6 to 8 weeks, you'll receive a card allowing you to request an official copy of the your baby's birth certificate. The State charges a fee for this service. For more information, call (619) 692-5733. Please do not call the hospital to inquire about the birth certificate.
Baby Track Program for Immunization
Baby Track is a special program provided by the Tri-City Hospital Auxiliary, in cooperation with the Public Health Department, to help moms keep their babies' immunizations up to date. If you register for the program while you are at the hospital delivering your baby, you'll receive periodic telephone calls reminding you that your child's immunizations are due. You may then schedule an appointment with your own pediatrician or family practitioner.
Sibling and Baby Care Classes
Be sure to sign up for our sibling class to help an older brother or sister welcome the new baby, and for baby care and safety classes to learn everything you need to know about taking care of your newborn, including bathing, feeding and infant CPR. For dates and times, see Baby of Mine Classes.
