Baby of Mine: Preparing for Childbirth

At the Baby of Mine Family Childbirth Center, we want you to be ready and to feel confident that you and your loved ones will have a warm, comfortable setting for labor, delivery and recovery. In addition to attending our Maternity Tea and Tour, here are some things you can do to get ready:

  • Pre-choose a pediatrician

  • Register

  • Sign up for childbirth classes

  • Prepare for the big day

  • Prepare for the drive home
Choose a Pediatrician

Early in your pregnancy, it's important to choose the pediatrician (baby's physician) who will examine your baby at birth and oversee his or her progress through childhood. Check your insurance and make a careful and informed decision before your baby arrives. Our Physician Referral Service can help you choose one of the many excellent pediatricians with privileges at Tri-City Medical Center.

Pre-Register

On the day your baby is born, the last thing you want to be doing is filling out admittance forms. Take care of the paperwork ahead of time by completing these pre-admission information forms.

Please print these forms, complete and send to:

Sign up for Childbirth Classes

You're not really prepared to have your baby until you've participated in our childbirth classes! Over the course of six weeks or in an intensive two-day session, you'll learn about relaxation and breathing techniques during labor, medications that can be provided, hospital procedures during childbirth and the role of your loved ones during this exciting time.

For regularly scheduled classes, see Baby of Mine Classes or call (760) 940-5784.

Prepare for the Big Day

Here's a check list of items you should have ready to go at any time:

  • Baby car seat secured in the back seat of your car

  • Identification and proof of insurance

  • Copies of immunization records for siblings under 14 who will be visiting you in the hospital

  • A bag packed with personal toiletries for your stay and clothing for the ride home for you and your baby

  • Special clothing for your baby to wear for his or her first photograph

  • Camera and film to record the occasion (check with your OB/GYN ahead of time to see whether videotaping is appropriate)
Prepare for the Drive Home

According to California law, all babies must go home in a car seat. Up to 20 pounds and one year of age, the car seat must be in the back seat and face the rear of the vehicle.

Take the time now to figure out how your car seat works in your car; some can be complicated. Our staff will escort you to your car, but for legal reasons cannot strap the baby into the car seat for you. You need to know how to work it yourself before you take your baby home.

Also, because we don't allow baby car seats or baby carriers inside the Baby of Mine Maternity unit for security reasons, it's best to leave your car seat or carrier in the car.

For more information about car seat safety, or to make sure your older car seat has not been recalled, contact Buckle Up San Diego at (619) 692-0178.
