Tri-City Hospice volunteers are special people. They are compassionate, caring individuals who use their time to help patients in the last days of life.
Tri-City Hospice Volunteers are:
- Specially trained to care for and support Hospice patients and families in their homes
- An important member of the Professional Hospice team
- Supervised and supported in their role of Hospice volunteer
Who Can Be A Volunteer?
- Mature adults who have a sincere desire to help
- Caring individuals who are comfortable with talking about death and dying
- Persons who can complete the required training program and can commit the minimum of four hours per week for at least a year
What does a Volunteer do?
- Patient/Family Services volunteers may help Hospice patients and family members in a variety of ways:
- Providing social and emotional support
- Caregiver relief
- Companionship
- Sharing special interests
- Helping with errands
- Bereavement Services
- Administrative Services volunteers assist in the Hospice office with a variety of clerical projects
What is involved in training as a Hospice Volunteer?
Hospice volunteers receive up to 30 hours of training on the following topics:
- Hospice history, philosophy and goals
- Communication skills
- The psychological impact of death
- Terminal illness and physical care
- Ethical issues
- Spiritual support
- Grief and bereavement
- Patient and family rights
The Volunteer Coordinator supervises and keeps in close contact with the volunteers. The Coordinator provides ongoing education and support on a regular basis.
