The Neuroscience Center at Tri-City Medical Center is dedicated to educating community members on how to reduce their chances of becoming a stroke patient, and helping patients recover from strokes. As the leading facility of its kind in North County, our center treats and supports stroke and brain injury patients throughout their recovery.
Award Winning Stroke Center
Tri-City Medical Center has earned the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers. Hospitals with this title are determined by The Joint Commission to have the resources, organization and expertise to diagnose and manage patients with acute stroke.
This Primary Stroke Center designation makes Tri-City Medical Center one of only eight hospitals in San Diego County that has met or exceeded stroke indicators set by The Joint Commission and the American Stroke Association.
In November 2008, the Center received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The GuidelinesSM–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) Bronze Performance Achievement Award. Tri-City is the first hospital in North County to achieve this recognition. The award recognizes Tri-City’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
TCMC has developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes immediate access to brain scan equipment and Interventional Radiology suites, the use of clot-busting medications when appropriate and the availability of specially trained physicians and nurses 24/7.
Once the patient is stabilized, they are transferred to a dedicated stroke unit where an interdisciplinary team of specialists continually evaluates patients with cardiac rhythm and video monitoring.
Rehabilitation Services
In addition to our award winning acute service programs, Tri-City Medical Center offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. This enables patients to achieve the highest degree of independence after injury and stroke. For more information, click here

Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
An estimated 3 million Americans suffer from some form of epilepsy and 20–30% of those patients do not respond well to medication. These individuals can still find hope through Tri-City Medical Center’s Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), where patients receive continuous EEG (brain wave) and video monitoring for three to four days.
Neurology physicians called epileptologists evaluate the patient using advanced technology. The epileptologist is able to define the type of seizure, localize the area of the brain where it begins, and develop specialized treatment plans. Recognizing that fear of recurring seizures causes many patients to lead a sheltered life, the program emphasizes quality of life.
Accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plans help patients leave the unit confident in their ability to manage seizures.
